My name is Bixby and just like the personal assistant I will hang on your every word and be very attentive to you in the event you are in need of something such as kisses or affection. I am a male who is approximately 1.2 years and around 45 pounds. I resemble a Collie mix I was born in New Delhi, India and have been through so much hardship in my young life. I have a remarkable story of survival and I know I am very lucky to be headed to the US to find my forever home. I arrived into Chicago from India on May 9, 2019. I hope to meet you soon! Here is my story. Thanks for reading it.
My story is written by my rescuer and savior.
I was rescued from Chanakyapuri. I was roaming in the road and did not know where to go as I lost my way. Other dogs were attacking me as I was in their territory and they were protecting their turf and their resources. I did not belong and felt like an outcast in fear of my life.
I had a family once and I felt loved. One day they dropped me off in this foreign place and I had to fend for myself. I don’t know what I did wrong and I was depressed and thought I would not survive for long in this new and scary place.
When my rescuer found me I was cowered in a alley and had cuts and flesh wounds from other dogs. The day she found me was the day that saved my life and was the start of hope and trust beginning. This was the first day in a long time that I thought I might live and that life might be good again. I was shown that humans can be kind and I came to love their attention and company.
My rescuers saw me transform and become a joyful, trusting, and loving boy. They saw the best of me shine through. They did not give up on me when I was at my worst but instead nurtured me and had faith in me. I won’t disappoint them and I won’t disappoint you. I promise. I know how very fortunate I am to have this second chance at life and to have the opportunity to travel to the US to find my forever home. I am a very low maintenance dog or so I’m told. I am smart, attentive, and affectionate. I am potty trained and crate trained and I love the company of other dogs despite my past. Once I adjust to the midwest climate I will probably become more fluffy and my hair will grow out a bit so I will have fringe on my butte, legs and ears and have medium hair. I am told I am very handsome. Come meet me and you be the judge.
Desi (day-see) —or Indian— Dogs live on the city and village streets of India. There are an estimated 260,000 street dogs just in the capital, New Delhi. Also called Indian Native Dogs or Pariah Dogs, these incredible animals are intelligent, good-looking, athletic, and full of character! In India, the dogs face extreme temperatures (damp, chilly winters and 115-degree summers), cars and other fast vehicles, disease, monsoons, and violence from people, as well as other street dogs. Some “community dogs” are sterilized, vaccinated, and fed by wonderful volunteers, while most street dogs experience indifferent cultural attitudes and survive on their own efforts and luck. Litters of pups are often drowned, buried alive, stoned, or removed from their mothers. Most citizens do not know about dog sterilization and vaccination, and if they do, many cite religious beliefs against spaying/neutering. In the cities, there is major cultural interest in the “superiority” of “purebreeds.” Unfortunately, even the labs, pugs, Dobermans, St. Bernards, boxers, and German Shepherds are frequently abandoned as many families do not have the funds, space, and knowledge about responsible long-term dog ownership. In recent years, compassion and interest towards the native street dogs is slowly, slowly developing, but there are not nearly enough potential adopters to welcome the huge number of rescued street dogs.
