Woof! My name is Lexi! I am a friendly 2 yr old girl from the deserts of Doha, Qatar. I am a gorgeous golden retriever/German Shepard looking dog although I am probably a mix of many things. I am house broken, kennel trained, microchipped, spayed and current on vaccinations. I am ready to join your house and family! Here is my story of survival – thanks for reading it and I look forward to meeting you!

The day I was picked up I thought it was going to be my last. The vet and my rescuers thought so to. I was so malnourished and weak – no one thought I would make it. It was a rainy day when they picked me up, I couldn’t move to seek shelter so I just lay there getting colder and wetter. Luckily, the ladies from Paws Rescue Qatar saw me, and immediately took me to the vet. I was scared, sick and in pain, but I couldn’t fight, so I just lay there on the vets table where they talked about me. They all looked very sad, and I heard them say I might not pull through, so I was determined to prove to them I was a fighter.

I was diagnosed with pyometra and had to have my womb removed, I also had a huge abdominal infection and acute kidney disease from e. coli. I spent a few weeks at the vets so I could get better. Eventually after having treatment and medicine I began to feel better- I began to feel happy and loved. Then, the day came where the vet said I could leave the clinic! I went to a lovely home and my new foster paw-rents looked after me.

My foster mum and dad are amazing. They’ve taught me so much—life is so different from when you live on the street! I get food served every day, always have a comfy bed, and lots of happy and friendly faces around. I don’t have to be scared about getting sick or people hurting me.

I like playing with my toys- it’s so much fun to take all the fluffy stuff out from them!! I enjoy running around as well- although my mum only lets me run around when I’m in a safe area as I run really fast and she’s scared I’ll run off! I have a couple of dog friends now too and we have fun on play dates.

My foster family in Qatar were moving and I so I needed a new place to seek shelter.  I flew all the way to the US and am now in foster care in Wadsworth, IL at ISDF and Dawn says I am a great girl who is very low maintenance and super loving. I know I can’t stay here forever though and I am very ready to join my forever home.  I want more than anything to find my own people to love me and to give love to.  I promise to love my new family and be the best pet ever! I won’t let you down- I’m so thankful I have a second chance at life. I have no special needs from my earlier sickness. I am a healthy, happy and confident dog now. I am just waiting to find my people.

Paws Rescue Qatar is one of just a couple non-profit organisations in the nation dedicated to animal welfare. They help injured and abused strays by treating, rehabilitating and re-homing them, as well as helping abandoned pets. We live in a country that is rich by wealth, but in terms of compassion for animals and animal welfare- not so much. We often see racing, hunting, and fighting dogs discarded at the end of seasons. Often once loved pets are dumped when they are too big to carry in a handbag and are no longer a cute little puppy. Due to the stigma attached to owning pets in the country most of our animals travel overseas. It is very difficult to find good homes for street dogs in Qatar and oversees adoption tends to be their only chance at finding a loving homes and leading fulfilled lives. At present Paws Rescue Qatar has around 100 dogs and 150 cats at their shelter, with more in foster, vet clinics and on the streets. Although they can’t house and “save” them all they do provide food and vet care for many dogs living on the streets. They aim to raise awareness of animal welfare by educating the public on animal welfare and working with the government on TNR programs.
