Sultan was born a street dog in New Delhi, India where he lived a perilous life, surviving from day to day. One evening last October, he was struck by a car that rammed into his front left side and left him for dead. Many dogs in his condition would simply be left to suffer in extreme agony until death as there are far too many street dogs at large in India – countless of them, injured or disabled – and far too few capable people able to handle these complicated medical cases. Lucky for Sultan, his accident was witnessed by a nearby guard.
Courageous boy that he is, despite agonizing new injuries (not to mention myriad past war wounds), he began to drag himself out of the road as more speeding cars zoomed past, several nearly hitting him again. He successfully got himself over the street curb and in front of another building nearby before he lay his head upon the sidewalk, at last seeming to give up. Knowing that dog lover (and ISDF rescue friend) Isobel lived nearby, the guard rushed to alert her.
Besides Sultan’s fresh injuries, he had several old wounds which appeared incredibly painful and were maggot-infested. It appears that a dislocated shoulder resulted in partial lost nerve sensation in the lower part of his left front leg, so Sultan now walks with a bit of a limp – the only visible reminder of what he once endured. Otherwise, he is a happy young boy, strikingly handsome, and with an incredibly sweet and gentle nature.
It is difficult to find dedicated adopters in his home nation, especially for former street dogs, and even more so when they are thought to be “damaged goods”. His only option seemed to be living out the rest of his days in a miserable city pound, often populated with aggressive, territorial dogs often forced together into large group kennels. For a sweet boy like Sultan, this could spell death – or at the very least, a depressing remainder of his life.
Isobel and Desi Furries Worldwide approached ISDF and explained Sultan’s plight. They continue to provide top medical care for him in India, but the United States has preeminent medical care available in every city of our nation. Additionally, despite his minor handicap, many of our countrymen are willing to open their homes and hearts to a little lover like Sultan who has known a life with nothing…and now appreciates everything. Finding a forever home via overseas adoption is his only chance at a real future.
So – to America he will come, and we look forward to welcoming him with open arms in late March/early April. We know the perfect family is out there just waiting for sweet Sultan to join them and make them complete!
