Great News! Shansli now named Johnny is HOME. Randy Eidenberger of Milwaukee, WI and his wife have welcomed our beautiful boy Shansli / Lucky into his home. Randy named him Johnny in the loving memory of a close friend who has passed away. Johnny reminds Randy of a childhood dog that he had fond memories of.
Randy tells us that Johnny has been very well behaved and that he loves going for daily walks. He is very calm and well mannered in the house and has been a great companion to Randy. Randy is planning playdates with some of the neighbor dogs and frequent trips to the local dog park. Randy is semi-retired so he has lots of time to spend with Johnny… Randy is looking forward to many years of loving companionship and fun times with Johnny.
Thank you to Elif Kutlugun and Fey Rubeyi for working so hard to allow Johnny to have a second chance and lead a fulfilled happy life. Most of all thank you to Randy Eidenberger and his family for opening their hearts and homes to this special guy.
ABOUT SHANSLI – aka Lucky
My name is Shansli, which translates into “Lucky” in English. They call me handsome, too.
Lucky was found in the snow in the town of Ankara, the capital city of Turkey by his foster mom.
He is very sweet and friendly, loves people, kids and dogs. Lucky plays with other dogs all the time, loves his toys and is very good on a leash. He is submissive to other dogs, and aggressive dogs. He would rather run from them than have an altercation. He does not like fights and almost never barks.
Lucky is fixed, healthy young boy. House broken, calm and a healthy young boy. He is ready for his forever home. He is such an affectionate dog that, they brought a very disturbed, scared abused puppy over to the hotel and he took care of the puppy, played with it, slept and spent most of the time making sure the pup will be cured. And now the pup is extremely playful and loves life again.

Lucky’s Story:
My name is Shansli, which translates into “Lucky” in English, you may call me “Shany”. They call me handsome, too. It was a very cold dark night somewhere in the suburbs of Ankara, the capital city of Turkey when my savior was almost going to run over me with her car. She immediately got out of her car to check on me, she did not know that I was all alone, so she hang around with me just in the event someone or my mom would possibly show up. I was very little and shivering. Snow had covered my entire body and I wasn’t able to even see what was going on around me. All I knew that I was looking at her through the ice that has covered my eyes.
She picked me up and cleaned my eyes, and immediately wrapped me with her jacket and put me in the car and said, ”Ok, let’s go”. While she was driving I felt the heat of the car and the warmth of her heart, then my shivering stopped.
Now I’ve grown to be a year and a half. The place Elif found me was an empty land with no trees and no shelter; there was no way that I could’ve survived, conditions such as this kills many dogs and probably killed my poor mom, too.
Now I live in a dog hotel with my other fellow dogs. I am very sweet and friendly, I love people, kids and dogs. I play with other dogs all the time. I love toys and I am very good on a leash. I am submissive to other dogs, and aggressive dogs, I run away from them, I don’t like fights and I almost never bark.

Dogs are everywhere in Turkey. You can see them roaming around in cities, forests and open areas. Additionally; within the law, individuals can also call in to complain the city municipals to remove the street dogs from their fancy neighborhoods. One call is enough to make a horrific removal of the dogs, either poisoning them or abandoning them into the forests. The forests of the big cities are packed with unwanted dogs, shelter systems are not similar to U.S. shelters they do not put unwanted dogs to sleep, however some dogs can spend their most of their lives in a shelter, since there is no such a trend as adopting from shelters. Some shelters are acceptable and some are very bad that dogs are dying from hunger and abuse.
Puppies are always cute and sweet, till they grow to be rambunctious and too large to be kept in an apartment. But they cannot survive the streets on their own. People take puppies inside their homes then a year later they dump them out to the streets or the forests. Some neighborhoods in Istanbul are aware of their street dogs; you can see some dogs live in front of an apartment, you might get aquatinted to some dog food thrown on the street. However streets are never safe environment for any dog in any city. Zipping cars, mean kids or adults, exposed to abuse, torture. Harsh weather conditions are not ok for any domestic animals, being wet in a snowy day or extremely thirsty in very hot day can kill those poor dogs. And now with a new trend of dogfights, dogs disappear from the streets in accessions assuming they end up in dog fighting facilities, which has been ignored nor controlled by the Turkish government.
The good news is, the lives of these dogs depend mostly on volunteer work, awareness is rising, regular forest feedings are happening, Volunteers do pay regular visits to shelters and expose any negligence or incidence. People like Elif, who work so hard and spend most of their money on vet bills to save those innocent lives, many volunteers do push the “adopt and do not buy”, “spay and neuter” policies. However it is not enough, way too many dogs are on the streets and forests, and way more dangers wait for them.
Our aim is to share pictures and stories of these dogs while they are in their forever homes pampered and taken good care of, and spread the awareness of how these dogs are very appreciated here in US and the Turkish people should take action and stop supporting petshops and puppy mills.
Shansli is 2 year old calm lovely boy. 55 pounds, loves to play enjoys other dogs company, submissive, easy going mutt dog. All shots complete with great health record. Loves kids, and adults, not sure with cats, you got to try it yourself. House broken, great on a leash, knows some commands in Turkish.
