My name is Rahma, an Arabic name and word embodying deep compassion and nurturing love, like a mother has for her children. I’m a sweet, 5-year-old dog from the coastal city of Sur, Oman, and for most of my life, I’ve been known as only as Mama. I’ve given birth to litter after litter of puppies and I’ve always done my best to keep them safe, not an easy task for a wadi dog—a local and lowly street dog—in Oman.
As is true for many of Oman’s native wadi dogs, I’m kind, friendly, gentle, and sociable despite having had a tough life. I’ve never shown anger to people, even though they have at times hurt me. I am wary of children at first, since on the street here they are often very unkind. In my nights alone under the wide sky, I’ve dreamt of a life full of safety and soft things, affection and companionship. I truly love to be around people. Thanks to the compassion of a group of volunteer animal advocates, I won’t be having any more litters, and will soon have my own loving home. I’m amazed by this good fortune!
Although I’m used to living free on the beach, I don’t mind wearing a collar and leash, and I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve been able to spend indoors. My ideal home would have access to the outdoors, for exploration and naps in the sun. I’m not sure about living with cats—-chasing them has always been one of my favorite pastimes. Here, I often take dips in the Gulf of Oman to cool down; I think I’ll enjoy America’s freshwater lakes just as much. I’m even excited to see snow! My last litter of puppies is already enjoying Northern life—-my friends found each of these babies a Canadian home!
l am a calm and healthy dog, and my friends have kept all my medical records and vaccinations up to date. My spaying surgery went well. I once struggled a bit with my hip after some human act of cruelty, but I got better and healed well. I will tell you that I prefer to dine alone—-in my life, there often hasn’t been enough food to go around, and I’ve had to think of myself and my puppies. Once I realize I’m living in a land of plenty, I should find it easier to share. But! To share my life with you will bring me unimaginable pleasure! My friends are certain that I will bring the same to you.
