I’m Pixie, a sensitive and lovely 1 1/2 year old Indian girl, born inside a beautiful apartment complex in Faridabad, in the outskirts of Delhi on Christmas Day in 2016. There were 6 of us—5 sisters and 1 brother. You may have guessed by now, that Noches and Softy who are flying with me in search of our forever homes, are my sisters! In fact, Seema, the wonderful lady who has looked after us since our birth, says I look just like Noches, but shorter, with crooked ears. Seema finds my ears really cute, and often calls me ‘Crooksie’ for this reason!
Seema handfed us when we were little and took us to the vet for all of our vaccinations, and for spaying, before we could have puppies too. But not all the residents of this apartment complex were as kind as Seema, and some actually threw stones at us and tried to chase us away with sticks! Seema resettled us in the complex’s parking area, but many residents still wanted us thrown out of the place. I felt safest sitting on the roofs of cars, especially the really tall ones’ called SUVs! My sister and best friend, Softy, would join me on the car tops while Seema kept advocating on our behalf.
And it wasn’t only the human residenhts that were out to get me, but some bigger dogs as well! I am very shy and submissive, and was frequently bullied. Every morning when Seema came to feed us, she would check my body for bites and injuries, and treat any she found with Betadine and antiseptic cream. One day I got badly bitten by one of the bullies. The wound was so deep that I needed 5 stitches! Fearing for my safety, Seema decided to move me to the safety of a beautiful boarding facility. She let me bring Softy along; Seema knew we would be lonely without each other! And now we are learning to live in a home, walk on leashes, and sleep in our crates.
I am really excited that I’ll soon have a forever home and family, though to be honest, I’m pretty nervous too. Due to my sensitive, shy temperament and negative early life experiences, I will need a supportive and patient adopter at my side, as I learn to realize that I’m loved and safe. A calm environment would suit me best. My biggest dream is that I will be able to bring Softy along with me again, and that we will get adopted together! Softy really boosts my spirits and my confidence, and she’d be happy to brighten your world too! A life sprinkled with pixie dust and full of silky softness would be delightful, don’t you think? Won’t you please take Softy and me home?

Desi (day-see) dogs live on the city and village streets of India, with an estimated 400,000 in the capital Delhi, alone. Also called Indies, Indian Native Dogs, or pariah dogs, these dogs have changed little over thousands of years. Desi dogs are highly intelligent, alert, good-looking, athletic, and full of character. Many urban desi dogs have recent European breed ancestry too, along with sighthound sleekness and speed.
While most street dogs experience indifference at best, some neighbors and business owners look after their community dogs. Delhi’s extreme weather (cold winters, sweltering summers, thick smog, and monsoons), dangerous traffic, disease, human violence, and attacks from other dogs, ensure that most desi puppies die before reaching adulthood. It’s a great irony that increasing numbers of status-conscious Indians are buying expensive and ill-suited foreign breed dogs, while more resilient and regal-looking native Indian dogs often have to travel internationally to find willing adoptive homes. Most of the desi dogs that ISDF places could not survive on Indian streets due to early orphaning or injury, or have been rescued from especially threatening situations.
