Hi – my name is Jajang and I am a beautiful (at least that’s what people tell me) looking black Great Dane mix. I was named Jjajang as my color is black and Jjajang is one of Korea’s favorite foods, which is black bean noodles. I was born on a dog meat farm in a country town in Korea with my brother Kare. As hard as it is to believe there are farms in my home country where dogs are raised to be sold to restaurants as human food. It is shocking to most in the West who cherish dogs. It is a tough existence and most die very young. I was one of the lucky ones as some very nice people from a rescue group called Last Chance for Korean Dogs (LCKD) saved my brother and I from being sold to the dog meat market. Out of the many dogs on that farm, we were rescued as we were still only babies and didn’t get well looked after nor were we taken to the hospital even once. Unlike my brother and I, my mom and dad were not so lucky and were sold off to some men who came in a scary truck and took them away in cages. If I weren’t rescued, I would have also been taken by those scary men when I grew up big and strong. Unfortunately, most of my friends don’t get a chance to get rescued to start a new life. Since being rescued, I have received all my vaccinations and also got neutered so I am 100% healthy.
I spend my days with my brother in a foster home waiting for someone who will love me and give me a forever home. As I am getting a little bit older, I have seen many of my friends find new families and I sometimes think people don’t like me because I am a mixed breed which is not popular in Korea. Even though I am a mixed breed, I am just as loving and playful as my other friends. I really love playing with my friends and I have lots of energy. My rescuers believed that my only chance of adoption would be to come to the US. So off I will travel – my arrival into Chicago is on November 13, 2018. I am nervous and hopeful for the future.

I arrived into Chicago with Kkhami on November 13, 2018 and am doing great at my foster home in Wadsworth. I am inquisitive and loving and get along with all my new foster friends. Now I am patiently waiting for my family to find me.
South Korea has widespread dog meat farming, and approximately 2.5 million dogs are slaughtered and eaten each year as part of Asia’s dog meat trade (DMT). Unregulated “farms” house anywhere from several dozen to 1,000 dogs, crowded into raised wire cages, with no veterinary care, and abysmal sanitation. The brutal torture of dogs as they are slaughtered, in sight of the other dogs, is believed to increase adrenaline in the meat, promoting increased health and virility when consumed.

As loving family members, these rescued South Korean puppies will grow up to be ambassadors of the global effort to end the DMT. South Korea is facing mounting pressure to end dog farming as the 2018 Winter Olympic Games approach, and international NGOs are using financial incentives and education to buy out farmers or facilitate the transition to fruit and vegetable crops. Dog meat is less popular among younger Koreans, and more dogs are being kept as pets, but few South Koreans want medium to large mixed-breed dogs. International adoption is a crucial step towards ending the DMT in South Korea and saving these wonderful dogs.
