BASIL AKA BUNNY IS HOME! Basil is a rescue from the streets of New Delhi, IN. She is now part of Anna and Steven Holz family in Wauwatosa, WI.

Basil now has 2 little boy human siblings to play with and love. Steve and Anna say she is a little bundle of love and has fit in perfectly with their family.

Hard to imagine what her life would have been like if it weren’t for the efforts of Premlata Choudary who rescued her from the streets and worked so hard to ensure she had a better life. Most importantly thank you to the Holz’s family for opening their hearts and their home to this sweet girl.

You too can save a life

Bunny’s Rescue Story

Like a little rabbit, I am a beautiful, curious creature who loves exploring and playing!  I am a darling, special female pup.  I was born in New Delhi, India, but I almost didn’t survive my earliest weeks of life.

When I was very young, some compassionate people discovered me and my three sisters on a busy, filthy street.  We were born near a garbage dump, and our poor mother died after giving birth to us.  This is the sad truth for many of the world’s street dogs.  My sisters and I were totally malnourished and weak.  We were a mess: exhausted, dirty, flea-ridden, and bony.  These kind people quickly reported us to Delhi veterinarian, Dr. Premlata Choudhary.  The next day, she rescued us.  Wow, was I excited!  I ‘hopped’ into her arms and never looked back.

Two of my sisters, the white ones seen here, were in dire straits.  One was paralyzed, perhaps due to an accident from a vehicle.  The other was suffering from a deep maggot wound on her head.  Dr. Choudhary and her team at the clinic provided them medical treatment, care, and love for several days.  I was devastated when I heard that they did not survive their severe injuries.

Thankfully, there are always yummy clovers to enjoy when the rain subsides.  My sister, Honey, and I fully recovered, and we are thriving!  We are now four-months old and have both lived with awesome foster families, so we have received a lot of great experiences!  I live with two young boys, and I just love them!  We play and play!  My foster mother says I am a “very friendly and very lively” typical puppy.  I am learning good habits for a pup my age, and I am practicing my leash-, crate-, and potty-training.  I am vaccinated and healthy.  I will be making the long journey to the U.S. soon to find my Forever Family, and you could be the lucky one to adopt a special survivor like me!

Desi (day-see) —or Indian— Dogs live on the city and village streets of India.  There are an estimated 260,000 street dogs just in the capital, New Delhi.  Also called Indian Native Dogs or Pariah Dogs, these incredible animals are intelligent, good-looking, athletic, and full of character!  In India, the dogs face extreme temperatures (damp, chilly winters and 115-degree summers), cars and other fast vehicles, disease, monsoons, and violence from people, as well as other street dogs.  Some “community dogs” are sterilized, vaccinated, and fed by volunteers, while most street dogs experience indifferent cultural attitudes and survive on their own efforts and luck.  Litters of pups are often drowned, buried alive, stoned, or removed from their mothers.  Most citizens do not know about dog sterilization and vaccination, and if they do, many cite religious beliefs against spaying/neutering.  In the cities, there is major cultural interest in the “superiority” of “purebreeds.”  Unfortunately, the labs, pugs, Dobermans, St. Bernards, boxers, and German Shepherds are frequently abandoned as many families do not have the funds, space, and knowledge about responsible long-term dog ownership.
