My name is Carlo! I’m a wonderfully sweet and scruffy Thai puppy, getting ready to fly to Chicago on July 13 with my friends Ned and Minna, one day after I turn 6 months old! The first half year of my life was filled with many surprises, and I can’t wait to find out what the next half holds. Does it hold you trying to hold onto a wriggling me? I certainly hope so!
My fairy godmother Elisabeth Feigl has an amazing refuge for dogs called Elfe’s World on the tropical Thai island, Koh Samui. Currently, there are over 700 dogs at Elfe’s World—young and old, big and small, gentle and spirited—plus a multitude of alumni happily homed in Europe and North America. Some were rescued from smugglers in the dog meat trade, others were brought to Elfe sick or injured, and more were abandoned or saved from lives of abuse, neglect, and starvation. But only a few had the good luck to be born right here in Elfe’s World like me.
My incredible mama is a native Thai dog named Sandie. She was heavily pregnant with me and my siblings when Elisabeth brought her home to Elfe’s World on January 5, as her first rescue of 2018. My mama had been dumped at a local market two weeks earlier, and Elisabeth had seen her there every day since. Because of her sweet demeanor and obviously pregnant state, the vendors were giving my mama scraps of chicken and leftover food, but Elisabeth knew the market was no place to give birth. Seven days later I was born, the 2nd out of three boys and a girl, and the only ginger in the bunch. A kind woman named Carla saw my photo and became my sponsor: I’m Carla’s namesake and a piece of her heart!
My life so far has been full of love and fun, with some sadness too as we lost our sister Gracie at 4 months old. I look like an Irish terrier, but who knows what kind of dog my father was. We were a very diverse looking litter! I am a boisterous, loving, and playful boy, with plenty of puppy energy. I would be very happy if I had a canine sibling as a partner in crime, or frequent play dates with other dogs at a minimum—I really enjoy their company! I’ve already been neutered, my microchip’s in place, and I’m up to date on all of my shots.
Living with a family as a companion animal will be a brand new experience for me, and quite different from the life I’ve known, but I’m confident that I’ll be a great student and enthusiastic lifelong learner. I haven’t really been around kids, but I’m a friendly guy, so I think we’d get along well. I suspect I’d find cats a lot of fun to chase. I’d love an active family because ‘m just about the opposite of a couch potato, though I’ll be very happy to curl up on the sofa with you after I’m all worn out from an exciting and stimulating day. So what do you think? Will I be a good fit? I hope you have a Carlo-shaped spot in your life just for me!
