Hi My name is Choonja and I was rescued from Seoul, S. Korea. My name means Spring Girl and I think it is appropriate because just like spring and I experiencing a rebirth and will continue to flourish in my new home. I am 2 years old and 30 pounds and resemble a Pointer mix. I arrive on March 24, 2019 and will be fostered in Wadsworth, IL upon my arrival. Here is my story.

I was rescued when my hind leg got in a caught on a trap. Oh it was so painful and I thought I was going to die. That is when my rescuers from Last Chance for Korean Dogs (LCKD) came to my rescue. I owe my life to them.

I was taken to safety and received vet care and miraculously my paw healed to the point where I have no impairment and no pain today! This was one of many miracles that have happened to me in my short life. The biggest miracle is yet to come – finding YOU! I will be traveling soon a long distance to find you.

I was abused physically and emotionally and therefore will need adopters that are patient and loving and will let me continue to trust and build confidence. I can get scared easily but once I know I can trust you I will be the sweetest, loving, and loyal companion you could ask for! With more good experiences meeting new people I will become more trusting of strangers and new situations. I promise! Just please give me a chance to show you. I am a good girl.

I love to receive attention, kisses and pats. I enjoy the company of other dogs and enjoy engaging in play. I am so excited for my future and can’t wait to meet my forever family.

South Korea has widespread dog meat farming, and approximately 2.5 million dogs are slaughtered and eaten each year as part of Asia’s dog meat trade (DMT). Unregulated “farms” house anywhere from several dozen to 1,000 dogs, crowded into raised wire cages, with no veterinary care, and abysmal sanitation. The brutal torture of dogs as they are slaughtered, in sight of the other dogs, is falsely believed to increase adrenaline in the meat, promoting increased health and virility when consumed.

As loving family members, these rescued South Korean puppies will grow up to be ambassadors of the global effort to end the DMT. South Korea is facing mounting pressure to end dog farming as the 2018 Winter Olympic Games approach, and international NGOs are using financial incentives and education to buy out farmers or facilitate the transition to fruit and vegetable crops. Dog meat is less popular among younger Koreans, and more dogs are being kept as pets, but few South Koreans want medium to large mixed-breed dogs. International adoption is a crucial step towards ending the DMT in South Korea and saving these wonderful dogs.
