GREAT NEWS…….Chutki is HOME! This sweet girl has traveled a long way from the streets of New Delhi, India to find her happy ever after! Thanks to Joyita and Meredith, Chutki is one of the lucky few that will go on to live a happy fulfilled life in an amazing home. Most puppies born to the street live a short life punctuated with much suffering. Although Chutki’s life started out this way, as an orphaned puppy with a broken leg, she had a different destiny in store, a destiny to be with Michelle Orcutt. Michelle has spent time in Mexico and Peru and had encountered many street dogs in her travels. She was in awe of their resilience and resourcefulness and fell in love with several along the way. Upon her return there was one dog that stuck in her mind, and she ended up painting a portrait of this dog to keep her memory alive. This dog looked remarkably like Chutki. So when Michelle saw Chutki on the ISDF website, it was destiny fulfilled. A life saved. A story of inspiration and hope for a better future. Chutki, now named Diya, lives with Michelle in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with dog-brother Wiley, and kitties Cecil and Simone. #iSavedALife. #DesiDogsRock
Pre-Adoption Post
Chutki (which means “small” in Hindi) is a beautiful 5-month-old Indian street puppy, or desi dog. She has a very unique look: a jet black coat, an adorable white-tipped tail, and front legs that are white, grey, and brown-spotted.
Poor Chutki was discovered dragging herself around a parking lot she called home when she was just a few weeks old. Tiny and young as she was, her back right leg had already been broken, perhaps by a speeding car. Two young parking attendants contacted animal lover Joyita Bhattacharya begging for help (you can see Joyita in one of Chutki’s photos here), the woman who also rescued Tiger. Thankfully, Chutki was young enough to quickly overcome her injury. With proper food, veterinary attention, and Joyita’s loving TLC, Chutki’s leg healed beautifully. Ultimately, she not only survived – she has thrived.
Chutki is very quiet, sweet, submissive, and curious. Her rescuers gush over her temperament, and describe her as an absolutely lovely girl. There is a street dog epidemic in the greater Delhi area (Gurgaon is south of Delhi) and Chutki will continue to live out her likely-shortened life in this parking lot unless a loving home can be found for her overseas. She is well-cared for, as best as can be – the parking attendants watch over her and she has access to a small, protected hut area there, so she has it better than most desi dogs – but despite the care of the attendants and the love of Joyita, this is a poor substitute for a home of one’s own.
Chutki arrived on October 26th. In preparation for her fabulous future,
