Hi, my name is Cookie, a beautiful and proud brown and black indie girl – sweet like a chocolate nut cookie. I was rescued from the streets of New Delhi, India.  I am 14 months old and weigh 36 pounds.  I am just a petite girl.  I am spayed, current on vaccinations and micro-chipped.  I resemble a German Shepard and Golden Retriever but am certainly a mix of many things.

My rescuer from India named Jyoti has been hard at work trying to find a family to take me in, because some kids took me away from my mama when I was just one month old. In spite of her constant efforts, nothing materialized and no one is ready to take me home.   Unfortunately, street dogs are rarely adopted in my home country as they are deemed as not being “pet worthy”.  Nothing could be farther from the truth as most us make lovely pets.  We are smart, healthy and LOVE HUMANS.  I have been offered a second chance at life and am flying to Chicago to join the ISDF family and find a home!  I arrive on December 23, 2018.  My rescuer Jyoti is flying with me.  I am blessed.

I am playful, loving, and surprising calm for being such a young pup.  I like to nap and cuddle and am very low maintenance.  I would be good with experienced adopters or first time adopters.  It doesn’t really matter as long as you have love to share.

Desi (day-see) dogs live on the city and village streets of India, with an estimated 400,000 in the capital Delhi, alone. Also called Indies, Indian Native Dogs, or pariah dogs, these dogs have changed little over thousands of years. Desi dogs are highly intelligent, alert, good-looking, athletic, and full of character. Many urban desi dogs have recent European breed ancestry too, along with sighthound sleekness and speed.

While most street dogs experience indifference at best, some neighbors and business owners look after their community dogs. Delhi’s extreme weather (cold winters, sweltering summers, thick smog, and monsoons), dangerous traffic, disease, human violence, and attacks from other dogs, ensure that most desi puppies die before reaching adulthood. It’s a great irony that increasing numbers of status-conscious Indians are buying expensive and ill-suited foreign breed dogs, while more resilient and regal-looking native Indian dogs often have to travel internationally to find willing adoptive homes. Most of the desi dogs that ISDF places could not survive on Indian streets due to early orphaning or injury or have been rescued from especially threatening situations. Would you like to take me home?
