Hi, my name is Cristi and I am a beautiful petite 9 Months old Female rescued from the streets of New Delhi, India. I resemble a German Shepard mix and I weigh only 36 pounds full grown. I am lean and athletic – gifted with years of natural selection in my home country of India. They call my breed “Desi” dog. Although my breed is not officially recognized yet… some say it may be someday. I come from a royal and majestic lineage. I arrived into Chicago to find my forever home on March 1, 2019 and am currently fostered in Wadsworth, IL. Here is my story of survival.
I was born as part of a litter of 7 adorable pups. Our mother had wandered into a gated society in Gurgaon, India and gave birth to me and my siblings. One perished. The residents wanted us thrown out. Indian laws allow for street dogs to continue where they are born. However, since our mother had wandered in and was not an original of this place, she was routinely being chased out. Our rescuer fought for us to be able to stay in this residential community however all her pleas fell on deaf ears. We were given one month before we would be evicted. Our rescuer then moved us to a paid boarding along with our mother. One of our brothers got adopted in India and two others were adopted in the US. So my rescuer says it’s my turn now…. I have been waiting a long time.
Staying in a rescue home for a lifetime is not the best option for a healthy dog like me who has so much love to give. So I am here looking for a home. I am leash trained, crate trained and a wonderful loving dog. All I want now is a home to call my own. I am curious and love to explore new places. I love to take walks, something I could not do at the boarding shelter. My caretakers will tell you that I was one of the most well behaved of the lot at the boarding. I am hopeful that you will give me a chance and help me become a true blue American by taking me home and becoming my new family.

Desi (day-see) —or Indian— Dogs live on the city and village streets of India. There are an estimated 260,000 street dogs just in the capital, New Delhi. Also called Indian Native Dogs or Pariah Dogs, these incredible animals are intelligent, good-looking, athletic, and full of character! In India, the dogs face extreme temperatures (damp, chilly winters and 115-degree summers), cars and other fast vehicles, disease, monsoons, and violence from people, as well as other street dogs. Some “community dogs” are sterilized, vaccinated, and fed by wonderful volunteers, while most street dogs experience indifferent cultural attitudes and survive on their own efforts and luck. Litters of pups are often drowned, buried alive, stoned, or removed from their mothers. Most citizens do not know about dog sterilization and vaccination, and if they do, many cite religious beliefs against spaying/neutering. In the cities, there is major cultural interest in the “superiority” of “purebreeds.” Unfortunately, even the labs, pugs, Dobermans, St. Bernards, boxers, and German Shepherds are frequently abandoned as many families do not have the funds, space, and knowledge about responsible long-term dog ownership. In recent years, compassion and interest towards the native street dogs is slowly, slowly developing, but there are not nearly enough potential adopters to welcome the huge number of rescued street dogs.
