Hello, my name is Douchka and I’m an Indian Street Dog, born in a business center with a big car park and some green small plant beds, 2 years ago. I’m born end of October 2016 and a second time November 17th, 2016 my rescue day Here is my story. I am 2.5 years old girl and weigh around 40 pounds. I am spayed, current on vaccinations and micro-chipped.
My sweet mum choose a plant bed to give birth to me and my sisters, only girls… we were hidden under bushes, thinking that we were safe, but it was a mistake. I was 2 weeks old but I remember it well – the day was November 17, 2016. The gardeners gave waters to the plants, but so much water, too much water and we almost drowned at 2 weeks old. Luckily we started to whimper and a kind man named Thierry found us there under the bushes!
That was a lucky day. He asked to the gardener to stop to giving water to the plants immediately. He then made us a safe den out of a card board box and put us in a safe spot out of the way of traffic. At least we were safe with our mom.
The day after, a kind woman named Patricia arrived and made us a better bed which was important as it was starting to get cold at nights. Yes, winter exists in India too and it gets very cold at night. You can see our lovely blue little house we had in my photo gallery.
I guess you could say that was my first home and I loved it. Thierry and Patricia fed mum every day and she fed us. We were taken to get our vaccinations and mom was spayed. We stayed in that little house until I was 3 months old. We were starting to get playful and we completely destroyed our blue home. It was fun but then I was very sad that our home was gone. I started to become attached to humans and to my surprise they were WONDERFUL. Kind and gentle and they like to cuddle with us. I guess you could say we are human lovers thanks to Theirry and Patricia.
One of Theirry’s friends built us a bigger home with blankets. It resembled a large tent and I loved it too! I am embarrassed to say we destroyed it too. The temptation was just too great! Let me continue…..
Patricia and Thierry then decided to bring us to their home with my sisters Lola, and Macha. My sister Macha joined the ISDF family around 6 months ago and is living happily in Chicago.
Patricia took great care of us! We LOVE her. She fed us, gave us love, took us to the vet and even gave us baths. After my first bath, I decided that the bath bucket was a very good swimming pool for a rest when the sun was too aggressive. I found out I like water. How ironic as I almost drowned at 2 weeks. Ha ha! So many new things to discover. Life became wonderful.
Patricia and Thierry have taught me house rules and manners to help ensure I will be successfully adopted. I even learned to walk on a leash! I greatly enjoyed life as a pet but longed for a family of my own. They tried to find adopters in India, but were not since we are not pure breeds and we were born on the street we are viewed as not being “pet worthy”. Patricia soon realized our only chance to live happy fulfilled lives would be to travel to the US. I will be joining the ISDF family in Chicago on December 23rd. I will be fostered in Wadsworth, IL until my home can be found.
I have waited two long years and I am so ready to find my family. I have so much love to give and promise to make you laugh every day. I have been well prepared by Patricia and Thierry and I know I can do this. I want to please you and I will flourish with love and patience. Could I be your Christmas miracle?
Patricia says that I’m an elegant, racy and so sweet and cute young “Lady”. I hope you will think so too. I say that I’ve always been Patricia’s favorite in my litter. Don’t tell Macha. Perhaps it’s my striking blond and grey hair. I will miss Patricia and Thierry greatly but I trust them and know that good things await me!
I’m not dominant, but not shy and very loving and sweet. I love other dogs and people including kids.

Desi (day-see) dogs live on the city and village streets of India, with an estimated 400,000 in the capital Delhi, alone. Also called Indies, Indian Native Dogs, or pariah dogs, these dogs have changed little over thousands of years. Desi dogs are highly intelligent, alert, good-looking, athletic, and full of character. Many urban desi dogs have recent European breed ancestry too, along with sighthound sleekness and speed.
While most street dogs experience indifference at best, some neighbors and business owners look after their community dogs. Delhi’s extreme weather (cold winters, sweltering summers, thick smog, and monsoons), dangerous traffic, disease, human violence, and attacks from other dogs, ensure that most desi puppies die before reaching adulthood. It’s a great irony that increasing numbers of status-conscious Indians are buying expensive and ill-suited foreign breed dogs, while more resilient and regal-looking native Indian dogs often have to travel internationally to find willing adoptive homes. Most of the desi dogs that ISDF places could not survive on Indian streets due to early orphaning or injury or have been rescued from especially threatening situations. Would you like to take me home?
