Karma’s story from her rescuer:
Karma is my name. As they say, “Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and future happiness.” I am ready to contribute to your future happiness. Although my past months weren’t happy as I recall, dogs like me can get over their past so quickly, and with your warm loving care I shall be your good Karma indeed.
I am from Sakarya, a province in Turkey that is located by the Black Sea not far from Istanbul. They say it is a beautiful place, with very green grass, but I don’t remember anything but being separated from my mom and my siblings. I remember being little and walking for miles. There were gigantic, loud machines zipping along the roads carrying people here and there. I didn’t know they could be dangerous until I ended up getting hit by one. It hurt! It hurt so much. I was able to get away, but there was something wrong with my back leg. I could barely move it and hot, red liquid spilled out.
People came by and picked me up. They put me in a cage and carried me to a filthy, dark building where so, so many dogs were in little cages. They wrapped my painful leg in dirty cloth. It was so tight that after a while, the throbbing pain went away and the entire limb turned numb. I couldn’t lick my wound and it started smelling bad. I was weak and helpless; there were so many other terrified dogs around me, pacing and barking in their cages. I stayed there for what seemed to me was a long time, many weeks, frightened, shivering and hungry, very hungry. My leg was not getting better and I couldn’t walk on it. I cried for my mother as I missed her warmth and her comfort. None of the humans around talked to me or comforted me, the just left scraps of food every once in a while. I was miserable and exhausted, and spent most of the days and nights sleeping on a cold concrete floor.
Then one day, as I opened my eyes, I saw a beautiful, long-haired human smiling at me, her green eyes twinkling. Her voice was soft and comforting. With weak, tiny barks I tried to beg her for help. She listened, she heard me. “Ok you little one, you are coming with me.” She rescued me and took me away from that sad place. I was elated but also sorry for all the other dogs that were stuck there.
She took me to a roaring machine, but this time I rode inside of it instead of being afraid it would hit me. We went far away, passing many trees and buildings with clouds flying above. My rescuer took me to a place where other people were moving hurriedly about. Some wore masks; there were dogs barking, cats meowing, and I wasn’t happy about all the smells. They put me on a large metal table, and they started to unwrap the bandages on my leg. The smell was even worse than before. She begged them to save my leg, which they said was starting to rot. They listened to her and saved my leg, but it was an ordeal with a few operations to add a metal pin and a lot of painful poking and prodding. Soon however, I was able to walk on the leg again. I gained confidence and started to dream again, of green grass beneath my paws and a loving home to live in. Sule, my guardian angel, took me on walks where I met many dogs and little humans. I made friends with all of them. She also told me that she has to send me far away in a flying machine so that I can find my forever family. So I am waiting for you, Mom or Dad, to please choose me! I’ll be the good Karma you have been looking for.
