Pre-Adoption Rescue Story
Approximately four months ago, early in the morning, Anil Anchan – friend of one of our New Delhi rescue partners, Isobel Grant – saw a little puppy running on the highway not far from the airport. It was early still but there was already traffic. Soon, she would surely be in even more peril.
Once, then a second time, in an effort to keep her safe, Anil picked her up from the road and put her down on the shoulder to get her away from oncoming vehicles. But once, then a second time – being only four or five weeks old, helpless, and desperate – Lucy straggled her small baby self back into the middle of the highway. Terrified that a third attempt would result in her death – either immediately, or soon thereafter, due to increasing traffic – Anil realized the only way to keep her safe was to take her with him.
Now, as Westerners, we may take this logical conclusion for granted. However, we are lucky to not be faced with the overwhelming number of homeless animals that can be found everywhere you look in New Delhi. It would be spectacular if every dog in danger was brought into a home, but there are not resources nor adoptive homes domestically for them all in India, and the compassionate few would be quickly overwhelmed if they attempted this with every dog in need they saw.
Know that Anil and many other dog lovers like him are faced with these painful dilemmas daily…something special about Lucy spoke deeply to Anil, however, and he knew he could not bear to leave her behind.
Anil – Lucy’s guardian angel – took her into his car and back home, where his two adult dogs welcomed her and taught her the ways of a house dog.
For two months, Lucy lived with Anil. She is now four months old is healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
Lucy is active, playful, and house- and crate-trained. She is friendly and social with everyone she meets, and enjoys the company of other dogs as well. Lucy listens EXTREMELY well and without a doubt already knows her name! She is super submissive and loves to cuddling and kissing! Lucy was born in mid-September and is about 4 months old now. She should weigh approximately 30 lbs when full-grown.
Anil loves Lucy and has been very worried about her future. He cannot keep a third dog permanently yet he cannot bear to have Lucy return to the streets, knowing that she was not properly taught about traffic. Her mother may have been injured or killed prior to Anil’s finding Lucy – or she may have simply abandoned her puppy if she was a young and inexperienced mother who was not good at keeping track of her litter.
Whatever the case, Lucy has not learned proper street smarts. Responsible, lifelong, domestic adoption in India can be very difficult – there are just SO many dogs, and so few proper homes for them all. Making matters worse, those wealthy enough to own dogs often prefer to buy purebreds, which are considered a status symbol in India, while the Desi dogs are often viewed as lowly in their home nation.
Lucy’s chance for a safe, secure, happy forever rests upon her finding a home overseas.
ISDF is thrilled to welcome Lucy here to the USA in on January 20th! She has had a rough start to life, but with luck, those memories will continue to fade now that she has a real shot at a future she would not have had before.
Lucy is currently in a foster home in Wonder Lake, IL waiting to find her forever home. Lucy is thriving in her foster home and loves to play with the other foster dogs especially Sally. She brings endless love and entertainment to her foster family. What a gem!!
