GREAT NEWS! Nikku has found his family. Nikku joined Taylor and Ann Grant and daughter Olivia of Beloit WI today! Nikku was rescued from the streets of New Delhi India and is a survivor of being hit by a car.

Nikku is about 4 and a half years old and has been through a lot of hardship from near death after a car accident to dog fights and abuse on the street which is evident from his battle wounds. Despite all this he has a heart that is pure and filled with love and remarkably he has learned to trust humans and other dogs. A testament to the resiliency of a dog!

The Grant family saw through the exterior imperfections and in fact it made them love him more. It is after all an honor to give love and a home to a dog who desperately needs it and deserves it. To watch the beautiful transformation of a dog who has given up hope to blossom into their full potential and learn the joys of a loving home is a magical experience.

The Grants live on 4 and a half beautiful wooded acres and are animal lovers. They are very much looking forward to having the companionship of their new K-9 family member. The love and tenderness in which they welcomed him into their family was truly heart warming. I am blessed to have witnessed another miracle – only made possible through the devotion and caring of so many – Isobel Grant, Aarti Bhardwaj, and Premlata Choudhary – you are my heros and Nikku’s too!

Thank you to the Grants for opening their home and hearts to Nikku and making his dreams come true!

Nikku’s rescue – written by Isobel Grant, rescuer

On the evening of Friday 18 December 2015, Isobel was shown a photo of a badly injured dog that had been sighted in her colony. The next day Isobel was visiting her local colony market when she suddenly spotted the dog trying to get under a parked car. On reaching the car she could hear his howls of pain and went to get her car, parked nearby. After moving her car to the spot where he was located, she realized he was now on the road heading to an adjoining road. She managed to follow him on foot and finally caught up with him and gently placed her hands on his body to bring him to a halt. Because the spare leash, muzzle and crate were in her car, which was now some distance away, she tested him by picking him up slowly to see if he would bite. When she was confident that he wouldn’t bite, she picked him up and carried him to her car, opened the back door and gently placed him in a dog crate. Nikku was then taken to Dr Choudhary’s Pet Clinic where the maggot wound on his head was treated. Following this he was taken to Happy Paws where he is currently boarding. He was recently neutered and is being treated for a skin condition which has almost cleared. Although lame on his back leg, Dr Choudhary has confirmed that surgery is not required and his leg should improve with time.

Update 10 October 2016:His skin condition has completely healed and although he still limps a bit on his back leg it does not deter him enjoying life and getting around.

About Nikku (at the time of Dawn’s visit)

Nikku has obviously been a street dog but we do not think he is from Isobel’s colony. He has taken a little time to get used to humans as companions but has never shown any aggression towards anyone. He obviously hasn’t known the warmth of human kindness and seems slightly puzzled by the kind and friendly treatment shown to him. He loves Arti and Urvashi and comes running to them when they call him. He is still healing from his injuries but we believe once cured, and with loving care, he will become a friendly and sweet dog to his human family. He still has some way to go but we are hoping he continues to recover at Happy Paws.

Nikku today

Nikku is doing great with his foster family in Wadsworth, IL.  He is really a chill and low maintenance dog.  He seems to be appreciative for the slightest affection or kindness.  I think he knows how lucky he is and is thankful to be cared for today.  Little does he know the best part is yet to come.  He is just starting to learn the “joy” of toys and play.  He is engaging more and more with us.  His back leg which was fractured in the accident will show fatigue if he overuses it and he will start to limp.  If you are looking for a gentle, low maintenance, loving companion Nikku could be the dog for you.

He does well with people…. adults and kids alike and he is good with other dogs.  In fact, he is helping me to train some foster puppies at my house.  It is beautiful to see him blossom and become comfortable in his place as a loved pet.  It’s safe to say he is getting used to the good life.  Now the only thing better for him will be to see him find his family and become the cherished family member… 😉

Unfortunately, in India chance of local adoption is slim to none and Nikku is just too sweet to live out his life on the street or in an overcrowded shelter.
