GREAT NEWS…. Pirro is HOME! Pirro was rescued from the streets of Albania and joined Matt Massich of Chicago, IL yesterday.

Pirro was found lonely and frightened earlier this year and thanks to the love and dedication of Erza and Izabela of Animals Need Me Organization he was SAVED. Yesterday his dreams came true when he found his human – his place.

Matt and Pirro just clicked. Pirro although tentative, calmly sat by Matt gently taking pieces of cheese while the bond formed. 30 minutes later they were taking a walk – Pirro’s Tail was in full motion the entire time.

Matt and Pirro are the perfect pair and I have no doubt many fun filled days together await them.

Thank you to all who have helped Pirro on his journey – Izabela, Erza, Oli, Abby and many more. Without the efforts of many this miracle could not have happened.

You too can save a life.

I am a 1 year old pup named Pirro, after a brave Albanian prince from long ago, and my story is one of rags to riches. To be sure, I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but I have confidence that great things are about to happen for me; life as part of your family will provide all the riches I seek!

I don’t like talking about my painful, early life, but I will tell you that my goodbye from my first owner was nothing but a careless toss over a fence. I landed hard on the other side, and was soon surrounded by much bigger dogs, all strangers to me. I’m a brave, noble dog, but I’m a little one, only about 15 pounds. When a shelter volunteer spotted me, huddled in a corner for protection, she thought I was a child’s discarded toy, just a black, furry, teddy bear. Only when she got closer did she see that the little bear was me!

Once I’d been cuddled and coddled and realized I was safe, I made friends with the other dogs at the shelter, and won the hearts of all of the human volunteers. My shaggy, matted locks were cut off, revealing an adorably dapper dog. I could tell how handsome I was becoming, so I didn’t mind being groomed at all! I’m told my best features, besides my tuxedo coat and charming smile, are my delightfully cock-eyed ears. You’ll often see one angled one way, and the other pointing another. I’m pretty sure my ears are lucky, because they brighten the faces of everybody who sees me.

I could be happy in many types of homes, though I do appreciate having company; I really like how “companion animal” sounds! I haven’t been around many children and have no experience with cats, but my human friends think I would do very well with either or both, as I’m very sweet and calm for my young age. Life as a house dog will be brand new for me, so I’ll have lots to learn. This said, I’m a motivated chap, and am sure that I’ll prove a good student. My vaccinations are all up to date, and I was neutered in April, so you won’t have to worry about that! I will be your best friend during happy times, and your biggest comfort when you’re sad—I know how it feels to be alone and scared. So please remember, Pirro’s my name, and you can be my game, my fortune, my heart, my home.

There are thousands of street dogs in Albania, many of whom were abandoned by their families. Everywhere you look, there are mistreated, poisoned, diseased and malnourished dogs left to die in the streets, or used for dog fighting. The situation is desperate but not widely known because Albania is a small country with little exposure to foreign travelers. The government does not devote resources to spay/neuter or vaccination, so the problem has escalated. The Albanian people, who for decades suffered through oppressive governmental regimes, see the dogs as a nuisance or worse, and abuse is far too common.

Oli’s animal advocacy group, Animals Need Me (www.animalsneedmeal.com), is based in the city of Shkodra, Albania. It was founded by devoted animal lovers who have organized spay/neuter efforts, and seek to find loving local homes for former street dogs. They are sometimes able to find homes for the puppies, but few locals want to adopt grown dogs. To house the dogs who don’t find homes, they built a small shelter, but the budget is tight, and feeding dozens of dogs is expensive. In hopes of freeing up space in the shelter for more needy dogs, they want to find homes in the U.S. for some of their friendliest residents.
