GREAT NEWS….. POPPY IS HOME. Poppy is a rescue from the streets of Oman and this weekend she joined Janet and Jim Cather and their daughter Tori of Glen Ellyn, IL.

Oh happy days. Poppy’s new exciting life didn’t take long to start – she has already made a trip to the lake and rode on a golf cart. Such a lucky girl to have found such a loving and fun family. Every dog’s dream. There is no doubt Poppy is loving her new life.

Thank you Nicolle Cilley for rescuing this sweet girl and working so hard to ensure she had a chance to lead a fulfilled and happy life. Most importantly, thank you to the Cather’s for opening your hearts and home to this sweet girl.

You too can save a life.

Pre-Adoption Post

My name is Poppy

I am a sweet female dog from Oman, and even though I am now 4 years old, you can still call me “Puppy’ because that is the nickname that saved me. I was a lonesome little baby, starving on the street, with no mother or owner around for food or protection. Just when my little body was about to give out, a kind woman saw me and called “Puppy!”  I jumped right into my rescuer’s arms and immediately fell in love. I knew my life had been saved.

Nicolle, my rescuer, took me home and fattened me up until I was a healthy, happy little girl, and she was able to find a good home for me in Oman. This is no easy feat, even for very cute puppies like me. People just don’t keep pet dogs in Oman–they call us unclean, and we are either left to roam the streets, chained up as guard dogs, or even worse, shot or poisoned. Sadly, my adoptive family was deported and could not take me with them, but my guardian angel Nicolle was still there for me. She’s been there for many other Omani animals in need, too.

Since then, my best friend at Nicolle’s has been a rescued mama cat, called “Mama Cat.” Although we are different species, we are peas in a pod, and stick together like velcro. I also like other dogs and enjoy playing with them.  I was fostered in Oman with 5 cats and one other dog.

I don’t have any health problems, am up to date on my vaccinations, and I’m already spayed and house trained. I know all my basic commands, and can even shake your hand! I love everyone I meet, and, I must admit, sometimes I jump up on my friends because I’m so happy to see them. Other than that, I mind my manners, and with your help, I’ll kick that habit too. I am an angel on leash, and don’t pull at all; off-leash, I will run fast and far.  Overall, I am a calm girl, and very good with children–I love them as much as Mama Cat!

I am protective of my home and will bark when someone I don’t know comes in my yard or enters the house without being introduced; I want to keep my family safe. It takes me a little while to settle in during car rides, but once I do, I enjoy them. I’m not a chewer, and the only things I like to tear apart are my own toys–they’re fun after they lose their stuffing too! My favorite game is tug of war.

Nicolle says I deserve my own loving family–she is sure I will make an excellent family dog. I arrived into Chicago on October 1, and am being fostered in Wadsworth, IL.  I’d love to be your puppy forever!

Oman is an Arab country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.  It has wonderful national treasures, vivid landscapes, and thousands of “wadi dogs,” ownerless, Omani street dogs named after the channels where water collects after the rains. These wadi dogs can be seen virtually everywhere, and are true pariahs, living beside people as scavengers but not with them as pets. Due to disease, accidents, abuse and killing by humans, and harsh weather where temperatures soar to 120 degrees, most wadi dogs do not survive beyond the age of three.
