Hi My name is Shadow – I arrive into Chicago on July 19, 2019 and will be fostered in Wadsworth, IL upon my arrival. Below if my rescue story. Thanks for taking the time to read about me and I hope to meet you soon!
Hi my name is Shadow! I’m a year old “saluki x Labrador x who-knows-what”
dog from the streets of Manama, Bahrain. I was called Shadow because I was
always quietly waiting at the back while my litter mates did the “Me first! Me
first!” routine! They’ve all found lovely homes. But I’m still waiting for my forever family,
which is strange because everywhere I go everyone says what a lovely gentle dog
I am…
I lived on the
street for 5 months during the long hot summer in Bahrain. It was tough but my lovely mum and older
siblings kept me safe and 3 really nice families took it in turns to watch over
us making sure we had food and water and regular health checks. There were lots of delivery trucks where I lived
and it became very dangerous so I was moved into a foster home. Oh my – I couldn’t believe my luck! I had
foster dog siblings to play with and cats to.
In fact, I have no idea why other dogs get upset about cats because I
love them and the strays too! My foster family had teenage children and I
sometimes get little people visitors too.
I’ve had a full
health check, vaccinations and been spayed plus I’ve been through lots of
behavior tests. I’m told I haven’t put a
paw wrong! I even got to meet some farm
animals, horses and chickens and was like “Whatever! Can we go play
now?!!”. I’m house trained, completely
crate trained and fine in cars. I don’t
bark (except to alert) and I’m really polite with people and other dogs. I’m a
little shy so sometimes I can have a little pee accident if I get afraid in a
new situation or another dog isn’t. But I
love to run and play with other dogs and humans. I’m learning lots of new things about the
world every day which sometimes I find a little scary but with a loving handler
by my side I’m fine. I still have lots
to learn as all young dogs do. But I’m
smart! Could you be my forever family
and teach me?

Rescue groups in Bahrain face many issues. There is one Rescue Shelter with limited funds that receives no government assistance. There are a number of rescue groups, however very little monetary or food donations are offered. All are attempting to raise donations to save the dogs. There are limited foster homes and due to high costs of exporting animals, many expats are unwilling, or simply cannot afford to adopt.
Another issue the rescue groups face is being able to feed 18,000 stray dogs. Many groups are looking to area businesses that would otherwise throw their scrap meats away from the meat departments. Many are asking for leftovers from restaurants and hotels, which again would throw away food.
The greatest battle is spaying and neutering. Government funds are not allocated for spaying and neutering, and again, we rely on donations. The population of stray dogs is out of control and continuing to grow at an alarming rate. We successfully held a CNR event May 2018 as FarVets from Cornell University came and we spayed/neutered 98 dogs in just 4 days. We are always seeking organizations to help with CNR. We plan to hold another event from June 7 for 6-8 weeks and are seeking veterinarians from the US to help again.
