GREAT NEWS…. Sonia is HOME!! Sonia is a rescue from the streets of New Delhi, India. She is now an official member of Elise Wawrzyn’s family.
Sonia went into foster care with Elise last month and Elise decided that Sonia was the perfect fit for her family and that she belonged with her. Sonia even hit it off with the resident cat right away despite never having seen cats until then. SONIA IS SUCH A GOOD GIRL and it’s wonderful that she found her family and happiness.
Thank you to Simmi Malhotra, Sonia Heller andPremlata Choudhary for working so hard to make her dreams come true. Most importantly thank you to Elise for opening your heart and home to this sweet girl.
You too can save a life.

Sonia’s Rescue Story
The life of an Indian street dog is definitely not an easy one. As Simmi fed nearly 80 dogs on the streets of Chattapur daily, she noticed me – how could she not as I was the most friendly pup, and Simmi decided that day to call me Sonia after a close friend and fellow dog rescuer. In fact, I’m told that Sonia – my namesake – is paying for my trip to the US in hopes of me finding a better future. WOW… I am a lucky girl. Simmi came back everyday to feed me and my siblings , when one day she noticed that I did not show up. I had been missing for a few days when Simmi decided to start searching for me. I was lost and alone and very frightened….. and then imagine – there was Simmi – this kind woman calling my name after 5 long days of being alone. I had almost given up hope and then there she was! I was malnourished and traumatized hiding in the bushes when she found me. Simmi took me home and showed me such love. I had no idea life could be so good. In her loving care I blossomed into a gorgeous and playful dog, who is full of life and hope.
As any 3 year old does, human or furry friend, I love to cuddle! Feeling safe and warm in the arms or paws of family is the best feeling I have ever felt. I am very fond of other dogs. I love to play with humans too. I like to think I’m a pretty lucky girl, you know, not all of us out on the streets get the opportunity to head to the wonderful USA in search of a furever home. My dream of being in a home and having a loving family where one day I will not have to worry about harm, hate or cruelty, is hopefully right around the corner, or around the world in this instance
Desi (day-see) —or Indian—dogs live on the city and village streets of India. There are an estimated 260,000 street dogs just in the capital, New Delhi. Most dogs in India are Indian Native Dogs, sometimes called pariah dogs; these incredible animals are highly intelligent and alert, good-looking, athletic, adaptable, and full of character–they are dogs as dogs have been for thousands of years! In urban areas the Desi dogs often have European breeds in their recent ancestry too. Dogs in India face many challenges: extreme weather (damp, chilly winters, 115-degree summers, and monsoon floods), chaotic traffic, disease, and violence from people and other street dogs. Some community dogs are sterilized, vaccinated, and fed by volunteers, but most street dogs experience indifferent cultural attitudes and survive on their own efforts and luck. Litters of puppies often meet tragic and inhumane ends. Most people are unaware of animal sterilization and vaccination, and if they are, many cite religious beliefs against spaying/neutering. And in cities, there is major cultural interest in the supposed superiority of European “purebred” dogs. Unfortunately, purchased Labs, pugs, Dobermans, St. Bernards, boxers, and German shepherds are frequently abandoned as many families do not have the funds, space, and knowledge about responsible long-term dog ownership.
