Who wouldn’t like a bit more sweetness in their life? Hello, I’m Sugar!  I made my debut at the start of 2018, and I’ve been lighting up the world with sweet kisses ever since! I’m an adorable, ginger-and-cream 2 and a half year old girl from India. My human friends say you can’t get enough of me, but I don’t think they’re right, you can! You can have ALL of me, from my cute licorice nose to my happily-wagging tail, if you are the one who adopts me!  I arrived into Chicago in 2018 and due to a series of unfortunate circumstances I am available for adoption again and still looking for my forever home.  I am such a love and I know that I just need to be patient because the right family is out there looking for me as well.

My story almost came to a bitter end before I even took my first breath. It would have, too, if not for the two amazing females that gave me life: my mama, Hope, and my fairy godmother, Jyoti!

In November 2018, Jyoti came upon the aftermath of a terrible road accident. A black and white dog lay unconscious and bleeding, with obvious head injuries. People were stepping around her like she was just another heap of trash, but Jyoti carefully picked the dog up and rushed her to the CGS Veterinary Hospital. The emergency doctor said the dog had skull fractures and a dislocated jaw, and told Jyoti it was unlikely that she would regain consciousness. Jyoti stayed by the dog’s side and gave her the name Hope, and after six long hours, Hope opened her eyes!

Hope remained in critical condition for several days before she stabilized, and then Jyoti got a surprise; Hope’s last round of blood work included a pregnancy test, and it was positive! Jyoti was able to bring my mama home. After a monthlong recuperation under Jyoti’s conscientious care, my mama gave birth to six beautiful, healthy puppies, including me! In spite of all she’d been through, Hope is a wonderful mama, and when we were little she always kept us warm and our bellies full.

Once we were old enough, Jyoti began looking for homes. She advertised on dozens of social media sites and brought us to adoption drives, but despite her persistence, no suitable adopters wanted lowly, local street dogs. In India we were homeless, though safe under Jyoti’s foster care. Jyoti had partnered with ISDF before, and after contacting Dawn with our story, we found out we would be flying to Chicago, en route to American homes! My siblings Obi and Sriracha were the first to arrive in Chicago and find their homes.  In July 2018 the rest of my family arrived including my mama Hope, my brother Kenzi, myself, and my sister Goji. All of us are living happily in the US.  All except for me I should say since I just lost my home due to my owner not being able to keep me anymore.  Auntie Dawn tells me that there is the right home for every dog and that I just need to be patient.

I am flourishing back at Dawn’s in foster care in Wadsworth, IL while I wait patiently for my turn at happiness.  I am a very gentle girl who has good basic obedience.  I am playful and loving and would love a family to call my own.  Just give me a chance and I’ll show you how much joy I can bring to your family.

Desi (day-see) dogs live on the city and village streets of India, with an estimated 400,000 in the capital Delhi, alone. Also called Indian Native Dogs or Pariah Dogs, these dogs have changed little over thousands of years. Desi dogs are highly intelligent, alert, good-looking, athletic, and full of character. Many urban Desi dogs have recent European breed ancestry too, along with sighthound sleekness and speed. It’s ironic that these incredibly adaptable, resilient, regal dogs have to look outside India to find adoptive homes, while status-conscious Indians buy “purebred” foreign dogs ill-suited the climate and conditions.
