VANILLA’S RESCUE STORY – as written by Meredith Allen – Vanilla’s rescuer and savior
Beautiful, gentle, and darling Vanilla is a survivor of a hit-and-run on New Delhi street. I discovered her severe state on February 6, as I stopped to feed her and her siblings. She was screaming in pain and huddled in a corner near our usual meeting area. Her back left leg muscle was split open from her pelvic region down to her foot, and the leg bone was completely visible along this tear. Her stomach area was also clearly damaged. Although I had known her since she was a tiny pup, Vanilla never let me touch her. She was just too scared, even though her tail was wagging! After her accident, her willingness to let me examine her was even more guarded. She tried to run away, but she was bleeding and crying. She fell into a construction hole and tried to hide under wires. I jumped in the hole, grabbed her by her scruff, and put her in my car. Upon arrival at the vet, the doctor x-rayed her body. Miraculously, her bones, organs, and spine seemed unharmed. The vet rushed her into surgery, and he said the next 48 hours would show if Vanilla presented other concerns, such as neurological. Her surgery was successful, and I brought her home two days later. She did not present any signs of health issues besides her injured leg. Vanilla’s leg and stomach area have healed incredibly. She has a slight limp in her leg but has full use of it to run and jump and play. Her hair is growing back, and her scar is less severe.
I have a two-year history with her mother, Vixen, and Vanilla and her siblings were a part of Vixen’s third litter. There were six pups in the litter. Two of the pups are presumed dead, as they have been missing since they were young. One of the pups was rescued and welcome by Rescue Without Borders in New Jersey. Two of the pups are healthy and strong and live on the road with Vixen and their older brother, King, who is the only survivor of Vixen’s second litter. I met Vixen and her first litter in the spring of 2015. I rescued three of her pups, Frankie, Muffin, and Duke. One pup was rescued and adopted by a local expat, and I buried two other pups. Frankie is an ISDF alum and was adopted by an incredible family. Muffin and Duke traveled to the care of TLC Canine Rescue in Minneapolis, and they also have wonderful Forever Families. Vixen, her male partner, and all of her pups are now sterilized. Vanilla is a precious, loving girl whose survival and beautiful spirit honors all street dogs worldwide. She will be an amazing companion, and I am so very happy for her to join the ISDF family.
Vanilla is 6 months old and approximately 20 pounds. She is current on vaccinations, spayed and micro-chipped.
Vanilla will be flying into Chicago from New Delhi, India to find her forever home. ISDF is anxiously awaiting this sweet girls arrival.
