In S. Korea eating dog meat is considered a delicacy and every year over 2 million dogs are killed in the most appalling ways – tortured alive because of a false belief that the more fear and pain an animal endures before death the better the meat will taste and the more medicinal benefits the meat will contain. Shocking for such an advanced country. This isn’t just pockets of ill informed peasants but well educated members of high society. In fact, the Minister of Tourism was quoted as recommending which type of wine goes best with the consumption of dog meat.
Luckily there are many people around the world and in S. Korea working hard to bring this practice to an end. One such person, is Jung Myoung Sook, a 61 year old woman of modest origins, who has dedicated her life to saving dogs from the being butchered in S. Korea. Some have even mistaken her for a beggar, however, this woman has saved hundreds of dogs from facing a horrible fate on the butcher’s table. She cares for over 200 dogs at her home – these are dogs who she rescued from the streets who could have fallen prey to the dog catchers and also dogs she has bought from the actual dog farms and butchers. She is happy as long as she has food (which costs over $1,600/month) for her dogs and worries more about being able to provide for them then herself. It is natural to think that you don’t have enough time or money to make a difference but the truth is each and every one of us has the capability to make a difference. If every one thought this way and contributed in some way no matter how small the world would be a better place.
