The Haiti Street Dog Project is US Based non-for-profit organization that is run in Haiti by a very dedicated team of volunteers who are working hard to help the street dogs of Haiti.
They were founded in 2015 by Diane Gaillard who is working hard to achieve their vision of building animal shelters across the island of Haiti. These habitats are a method for controlling, caring for, and handling the dogs of Haiti. In addition to working on their shelter project they have a team of volunteers who regularly feed and care for street dogs. They re-home dogs regularly and are working on a spay neuter clinic to address the root cause of the street dog epidemic in Haiti.
On Jan. 12, 2010, a massive 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti about 10 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince, killing 300,000 people and leaving 2.3 million homeless without clean water or food. Many street dogs perished in this natural disaster and thousands more were displaced, injured and without adequate food and water.
To a large extent the country is still rebuilding and the street dog population is not a top priority of the government. This is why it is critical for organizations like the Haiti Street Dog Project to become active in working with the government and other organizations to implement humane dog population control and on-going assistance to the dogs in need.
The International Street Dog Foundation is exploring ways to partner and collaborate with the Haiti Street Dog Project. This may include a trip to Haiti to understand the situation and the efforts on the ground and offer some assistance in re-homing dogs and raising awareness. Please stay tuned for on-going information about this up and coming organization and ways you can help.
